KogniHome Recognized as “Best Achievement” in North Rhine-Westphalia

The campaign “Germany at its best: North Rhine-Westphalia” honors Cluster of Innovation KogniHome

KogniHome – the smart apartment – placed in the top list of the “Germany at its best” campaign in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The initiative recognizes projects that have demonstrated excellent achievement at the nationwide, European-wide, or international level.

KogniHome, with its 14 regional partners, was recognized for its excellence by NRW.INVEST. and was placed on the website germanyatitsbest.de. KogniHome’s outstanding achievements are the result of cooperation with 14 project partners, who are working together on the intelligent apartment. The consortium is comprised not only of research institutions, including Bielefeld University and the University of Paderborn, but also various companies from the region of Ostwestfalen-Lippe. The companies bring together expertise from the fields of healthcare and social services with industry know-how.

Since 2011, the v. Bodelschwingh Foundation Bethel has worked together with the Cluster of Excellence Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC). For the KogniHome project, Bethel is providing information for the development of various KogniHome prototypes. The “thinking” apartment should be able to be used by as many people as possible. For this reason, researchers conduct regular tests with potential future users, including senior citizens, people with cognitive challenges, and children, who provide feedback on the designs .

The companies Miele, DMW Schwarze, and Hettich, along with other strong industry partners, are working together with the research institutions to develop three sections of the “thinking” apartment: an intelligent entrance area, a smart kitchen, and a personal trainer. A unique feature of KogniHome is that the project partners are already considering the ethical, social, legal, and technical safety aspects during the research and development phase. The KogniHome subproject “ELSI” is working on these topics with the Ethics Committee.

KogniHome has received €8 million in funding from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, for a total research budget of €11.3 million. “Germany at its best” is a location marketing campaign of the economic development agency NRW.Invest. In addition to the Cluster of Innovation KogniHome, the Cluster of Excellence Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC) was recognized for its outstanding contributions by NRW.Invest. in 2013, and the Lead-Edge Cluster it’s OWL was honored with this distinction in 2014. Bielefeld University plays a substantial role in each of these three projects.
