KogniHome Awarded “Selected Location”

KogniHome, the smart apartment, impressed the judges of the Germany – Land of Ideas initiative. On 11 May 2015 the jury panel announced the names of the 100 winning locations selected in the 2015 competition. The Cluster of Excellence Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC) at Bielefeld University was awarded the title “Selected Location” along with its 14 project partners from the academe and industry, as well as the social and healthcare sectors.

KogniHome is a smart apartment that enhances the health, quality of life, and safety of families, singles, and senior citizens. Collage: CITEC. The distinction is awarded each year by the Germany – Land of Ideas initiative. This year, the theme is “City, Country, Networks! Innovations for a digital world.” Companies and research institutes, but also start-ups and educational institutions, were invited to submit projects that deal with the challenges of living in the digital world. Germany – Land of Ideas is a joint initiative of the federal German government and the German economy, as represented by the Federation of German Industries (Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie, BDI). Together with the Deutsche Bank, this landmark initiative has awarded pioneering projects in Germany since 2006. The goal of the Deutsche Bank is to put the ideas of the German people – the country’s most important resource – in the spotlight and to boost the nation’s strength in innovation.

The KogniHome project is designed to allow elderly people and those requiring care to live independently at home. In the smart apartment, the door greets visitors, the mirror in the hall reminds you to take an umbrella if it is raining, and the kitchen helps you locate the right ingredients for your meal. The apartment is meant to help people with their everyday needs so that they can remain living independently in their own homes for as long as possible. The apartment is equipped with intelligent devices that are able to learn and can be easily operated using words or gestures.

At the regional Cluster of Innovation, the 14 project partners from Ostwestfalen-Lippe will continue working together for the next three years on KogniHome, the smart apartment that enhances the health, quality of life, and safety of families, singles, and senior citizens. The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research is funding the project with a total of 8 million Euro for a period of 3 years (to 2017). KogniHome is led by CITEC, the Cluster of Excellence at Bielefeld University. The official award ceremony will take place on 26 October 2015 at the CITEC Building.
