First Bielefeld-Osaka Workshop deepens Cooperation between Universities

The first Bielefeld-Osaka Workshop is held from 11 to 13 October at the Center of Excellence Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC). The Workshop marks the beginning of a long-term, regular, and interdisciplinary exchange of ideas between the two cooperating institutes, CITEC at Bielefeld University and the Japanese Global Center of Excellence: Center of Human-friendly Robotics based on Cognitive Neuroscience at Osaka University. The workshop will focus on research questions in human-machine interaction that are going to be studied at both locations. The goal is to launch concrete, bilateral projects and cooperations and to further intensify the existing high level of cooperation between the two institutes in this field of research. The participants at the workshop will be 16 heads of recently established research groups working in informatics, engineering, psychology, linguistics, biology, philosophy, physics, and medicine at the universities in Bielefeld and Osaka.

The core of the workshop will be presentations by the participants offering a contextual framework for productive discussions and work groups. The program will be steered by lectures from Professor Dr. Masayuki Hirata on "Connecting Robot and Brain" and from Dr.-Ing. Britta Wrede on "Emotional Human-Robot Interaction as a Facilitator for Learning”. These lectures are also open to the general public.

Participants may also gain practical insights into research at Bielefeld from tours through the laboratories of the Center of Excellence Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC) and the Research Institute for Cognition and Robotics (CoR-Lab). During the subsequent intensive work meetings at Schloss Crassenstein, smaller specialized groups will discuss concrete research issues in more depth.
