CITEC project featured at the 2nd Congress on the Demographics of the Future

KogniHome – A model for the human-machine interaction of tomorrow

With the motto “Bringing technology to people,” the 2nd Congress on the Demographics of the Future, hosted by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), will be held from 29–30 July 2015 at the Berlin-Schöneberg Gasometer. During this conference, participants will discuss new trends in the field and learn more about into current and future funding programs from the BMBF. The conference will begin with opening remarks from Professor Dr. Johanna Wanka, Federal Minister for Education and Research.

How should research on the human-machine interaction of tomorrow look like? Researchers at this conference will delve into this question, among others. Sonja Friedhof, from the Bodelschwingh Foundation Bethel, will deliver a brief talk on “User acceptance through participation: Universal design in KogniHome,” which will introduce the KogniHome research project led by the Cluster of Excellence Cognitive Interactive Technology (CITEC).

Within the KogniHome Cluster of Innovation, 14 different project partners from the region of Ostwestfallen-Lippe will work together during the next three years on a smart apartment that enhances the health, quality of life, and safety of families, singles, and senior citizens. The BMBF has provided eight million Euro in funding for this project through 2017.

In addition to Sonja Friedhof’s presentation, Professor Dr. Marc Hassenzahl (Folkwang University of the Arts, Essen) will give a talk entitled “Well-Being at the Center – The challenges and opportunities of technology designed for humans.” Martin Pusch of Otto Bock Healthcare GmbH will discuss to what extent developers are always inferior to the user’s fantasies in his presentation.

Ulrich Rückert will moderate a panel discussion on “Trends in service robotics,” which will address service robots as well as communication robots such as the CITEC robot ToBi. Professors Dr. Oliver Brock (Technical University-Berlin), Professor Dr. Alois Knoll and Dr. Ulrich Reiser (Frauenhofer Institute) will provide an introduction to the topic.

The BMBF’s 1st Congress on the Demographics of the Future took place in Berlin from 21–22 October 2013. CITEC Professors Dr. Helge Ritter and Dr.-Ing. Stefan Kopp were invited speakers at the first conference.
