Attentional episodes and cognitive control
John Duncan made several not unimportant contributions to research on attention (e.g., Duncan, 1984; Duncan & Humphreys, 1989; Desimone & Duncan, 1995) and on intelligence in the brain (e.g., Duncan et al., 2000; Duncan, 2001, 2010). The involved methods refer - besides behavioral techniques of psychophysics and cognitive psychology -, to single-unit recording, fMRI and patient studies. In recent years, he argued for a "marriage" of classical artificial intelligence concepts (e.g., general problem solver, SOAR) and cognitive neuroscience theories and methods.
