I will first talk about the need for sampling frequency in relation to effect sizes. Sampling frequency introduces an error in many eye-movement measures that adds to the statistical variance, but there is a clear mathematical relation that helps deciding what sampling frequency is necessary for a particular study. Then I will address the issue of data quality, and what it does to dependent eye-movement measures in studies. Data quality is very sparingly reported, and there is no consensus how to calculate it, even though it may have dramatic consequences on the results for certain studies. Finally, I will talk about event detection, what algorithms there are, and how settings and data quality affect the resullts in basic eye-movement measures. Knowing how event detection works is a key to understanding many eye-movement measures.
